Powerful Glimpses: A Short Story Workshop
Steve Potter
In this workshop we will tell stories from our lives and practice
writing vignettes to help develop a stronger understanding of
what it is that makes certain stories unforgettable. We will
also examine a number of short short stories and discuss the qualities that make them memorable and effective. Stories
examined will include works of two or three of the following
authors, as yet to be decided: Aesop, Sherman Alexie, J. G.
Ballard, Donald Bathelme, Rebecca Brown, Raymond Carver, Anton
Chekhov, John Cheever, the Brothers Grimm, Ernest Hemingway,
Shirley Jackson, Denis Johnson, Gordon Lish, Flannery O'Conner,
Tillie Olsen, Hubert Selby Jr. Don't feel you need to read
any or all of these authors beforehand (although, if you have
some time, of course do!) just bring pen and paper and the desire
to write.
Free to students, $10 for the general public.
