Living Room, February 15, w/ Paul Nelson

OPEN BOOKS

Paul Hunter

Paul Hunter

If we don’t read one another
who do we ever read
and if we don’t read one another
who can we expect to read us?
and if we don’t read one another
and if we don’t read
why bother writing
these lines so deep in our faces
that take so much living
to begin to make a dent
the child’s dimple a tiny word
the frown of a young adult
a curse and the sags the scars
by forty a couplet
by fifty or sixty scarce a sonnet
even by ninety and a hundred
the tale told rarely an epic
but always
always worth another look

– Paul Hunter

Writers of all ages and skill levels gather every Tuesday at 7P at SPLAB to read new work, the work of someone else or to just be in the engaging company of other writers. At Living Room this week we’ll take the first 30 minutes to learn about someone else in the circle and take another look with a writing exercise created by Anne Waldman and based on a technique used by Jack Kerouac. Paul Nelson facilitates.

Naked Poetry – A Workshop with Anastacia Tolbert

Oftentimes our most profound thoughts are poetic and earth shattering—and buried beneath the script that tells us, “I don’t think this is dressed up enough for public consumption.” In Naked Poetry, a workshop for people who wear clothes, we will debunk the oh-no-I-can’t-share this myth by writing about topics that make us uncomfortable, squirm in our seats and forget we ware wearing clothes. After we’ve gotten brave enough to write these poems be will practice the “flip” technique and rearrange lines using the theory of last line first. Come and be nude, challenged and flipped off. It’ll be worth it.

February 21 – Film: GOTBREAST? (A 2007 documentary about views of women and their body image/breast.) 7PM Screening.

Living Room 2.8.11 w/ Greg Bem

Greg Bem off his fork lift

Who do you live for? Who do you work for? Who do you love for? Who would you die for? Who is your art for? In this week’s Living Room the focus will be on audience and readership. As a writer you might spend most of the time satisfying your muse, your inner psyche, or the dead spirits hovering around your shoulders, but a lot of writers struggle finding a relationship between their own work and those on the receiving end. Come out to the Living Room this week and you’ll find new ways to strengthen the direction of your written work, including interesting exercises that work to expand your idea of the audience, an engaging discussion on the perceived idea of the reader and audience, and ways to make your poems, stories and songs more personal or wide-reaching. Hosted by Greg Bem.

Living Room happens at SPLAB in the Cultural Corner of the old Columbia School, between Rainier AV S and 36th AV S, on Edmunds. We’re 2 blocks from the Columbia City Link Light Rail Station. Free parking is available on the school grounds.
