Poetry Reading with Paul Nelson

Father/Poet/Teacher Paul Nelson, co founder of the Northwest SPokenwordLab is author of the recently published Time Before Slaughter, his first book of poetry.  He writes one American Sentence every day.

Paul Nelson earned his M.A. from Lesley University in Organic Poetry, a study of North American poets writing spontaneously, including Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, Charles Olson, Denise Levertove, and Robin Blaser. He is specifically interested in writing that is created in the moment, but with tremendous discipline.

He will be offering a free workhop is organic poetry earlier in the day at the San Juan Island Library.

Free Poetry Workshop for Teachers

Organic Poetry with Paul Nelson
Wednesday, March 17, 5-7 p.m.

Is the universe a machine based on competition, or an organism based on process, interdependence and relationship? Organic Poetry, a stance toward poem making dubbed by Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov, allows the moment of composition to be an occasion of experience, an experiment in consciousness. This entertaining workshop includes discussion of poets Charles Olson, Denise Levertov, Joanne Kyger, Michael McClure and others, sound from these poets and writing exercises designed to help you allow the act of writing to be an exhilarating revelation of content.

Bio:  This months featured reader is Paul Nelson, long-time Red Sky performer, board member, and supporter.

Paul Everett Nelson is a poet, father, teacher and broadcaster. Founder of the non-profit Global Voices Radio and co-founder of the Northwest SPokenword LAB (SPLAB!) – Paul has published three chap books, two CD’s – Twisting Runes and A Time Before Slaughter, a book of essays: Organic Poetry: North American Field Poetics (VDM, Verlag, Germany, 2008) and an epic poem re-enacting Auburn history, also entitled A Time Before Slaughter (Apprentice House, 2009). A professional broadcaster From 1980 to 2006, he’s interviewed hundreds of authors, poets, activists and whole-system theorists for a syndicated public affairs radio program.
