Big Joy (Film)

Dear Paul Nelson,

I’m writing to connect with you about an upcoming film screening at
Northwest Film Forum this November called BIG JOY, which we think may be
of interest to your community.

BIG JOY is the story of the life and adventures of poet, artist and
filmmaker James Broughton, an inspiring “outsider’s outsider” who
gravitated to the center of revolutions both sexual and artistic. The
documentary is a moving, lively portrait of an important artist exploring
healing and spirituality (an out poet during the oppressive McCarthy era
as well as the liberated, joyful bard of the modern gay rights movement).

BIG JOY screens from November 1 – 7 at our venue on Capitol Hill; here’s a
bit more information: http://www.nwfilmforum.org/live/page/calendar/2808

Can you help us spread the word (on the web, social media, or email) about
this locally made film that celebrates this transformative artist?

Thank you for your time, and I hope you can join us for a screening.

Best wishes,
Peggy Entrop

Call for Writers

Call for Writers: Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theater and the Bellingham Repertory Dance Company announce the 2014 Phrasings Collaboration for Writers & Dancers

Deadline: It must be received on or before Saturday, November 30th , 2013. Follow the instructions given below very closely.

Our 8th annual collaboration and performance of Phrasings, of original modern dance choreographed with new poetry and stories will be presented in 3 shows on April 11th, 12thand 13th of 2014. Phrasings happens in Bellingham, WA at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center (14th and Harris).

The Bellingham Repertory Dance Company produces fresh, engaging and diverse concerts that appeal to modern dance enthusiasts as well as first time audiences. The Company is an auditioned collective of accomplished dancers dedicated to bringing high-quality, vibrant contemporary dance to the Northwest. Phrasings shows are the highlight of the year for the company and truly celebrate the written word in new contexts. The shows are described “Fantastic! Unexpected!, Amazing to have both words and movement! Incredible dancers! I can hardly wait for the next show!”

Choreographers in the company read the written submissions with a fresh perspective. They look for feelings, images or stories to convey through modern dance. Six or seven performance pieces will be chosen and will involve one or more dancers. Some writing will be selected to be read-only as part of the program. All winning submissions will be presented in a Phrasings 2013 chapbook.

We are looking for a wide range of poetry and all forms of writing to be selected for:

Originality, and not previously published or performed.

Vivid imagery – The content could be personal, pastoral, and/or tactile.

Lyrical qualities – Give attention to rhythm and language.

Themes- The choreographers are highly innovative in their perspectives and engage with a wide range of themes.

None has ever been chosen that refers to dancing or has obvious dance content.

There are two ways to participate in Phrasings. Interested writers may submit to one or both approaches.

Approach One: Writing Submission – submit a finished piece of writing to be selected by a choreographer to incorporate into a new dance. Instructions (follow closely):

1.To submit: e-mail a pdf or MSWord document of submissions to chuckanutsandstone@gmail.com  Use this Subject line: Submission Phrasings 2014

2. Submit one copy of up to 3 poems and/or dialogue, essay or short story as a pdf or Word attachment. Do not put your name on the attachment. Limit yourself to pieces that are 1-3 pages in length.  You may offer a 4th poem or piece that is 20-28 lines long (using 1-inch margins on 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper, portrait orientation).

3. Plus, in the body of the e-mail, please list the titles (or first lines) of the submissions and your name, phone number, street address and e-mail address. Choreographers will select the submission that they want to work with from the pdfs.

Approach Two: Live Collaboration – a writer and choreographer will work side by side in creating something new. A writer will compose a piece of writing and a choreographer will make a dance simultaneously through a collaborative process shaped by their partnered artistic goals. The pair will decide together on how each of their work will be integrated and presented in the Phrasings performance. If you are interested in this form of participation, Instructions (follow closely):

2.To submit: e-mail a pdf or MSWORD of submissions tochuckanutsandstone@gmail.com  Use this Subject line: Submission Phrasings 2014

1. Submit one copy of up to 2 poems and/or dialogue, essay or short story as a pdf or Word attachment. Do not put your name on the attachment. Limit yourself to pieces that are 1-3 pages in length. This year the competition is especially interested in receiving poems up to 20-28 lines long.

2. Submit a cover letter that describes your style of collaboration. How you might work with the choreographer in creating something new.

Poems for Peace (Seattle)

Last night the Poems for Peace event was staged for the first time in Seattle at the Spring Street Center. A full report would be wonderful, but Meena Rose drove from Portland to participate and display her visual poems for peace. I found out only last night that she had to flee Baghdad as a war refugee, but this is her short Facebook post about last night’s event:

Poems for Peace

Poems for Peace

The Poems for Peace, Seattle event was nothing short of amazing. It was a long day for all of us: the drive, a couple of hours touring the Pacific Science Center then the magic of the evening culminating in a night of poetry, food and music.

I made a number of amazingly deep connections – some so deep and intense that I no longer remember the name of the person but only the significant imprint they left on my soul.

The flute music was nothing short of spectacular – hauntingly inviting. [Jim O’Halloran]. The Rant performed by Paul Nelson and his wife Meredith was phenomenal. [Diane diPrima’s poem].  The other readers simply WOWED. I definitely felt quite honored to be reading in the midst of such talented poets and performers.

Last but not least, I need to thank my children for allowing me this evening. They were the only kids on site and were relatively extremely patient with Mom doing her thing despite the late hour and the growing crankiness.

We will celebrate the U.N.’s International Day of Peace next year, as this SICA-initiated event begins to catch on around a planet yearning for something beyond business-as-usual, yearning for our birthright of peace and well-being for all living things everywhere.
