Prophets over Patriots

Superbowl of Poetry Ticket Stub

It was a theme back in the mid-90s for SPLAB to counter-program the Super Bowl. We got great press for
our annual Super Bowl of Poetry (see below) because journalists liked writing the predictable story about how silly poets were NOT going to watch the game EVERYONE ELSE was watching as if it were a national holiday and we were heretics. See this bookmark from year 6. (Felicia Gonzales canceled after we printed the bookmarks and Clarice Keegan has recently passed away.)

There was a time when the NFL was cracking down on business using the term “Super Bowl” without NFL permission, so to be smart asses, we moved the “b” over and once called it the “Superb Owl of Poetry”

This is just to say that I planned my American Prophets promotional gig for THIS SUNDAY, Super Bowl Sunday 2019 at 3pm at Elliott Bay Book Company, 1521 Tenth Avenue, Seattle. From their site: Paul Nelson, founder of SPLAB/Seattle Poetics LAB and Founding Director of the Cascadia Poetry Festival, joins us today with highlights from some of the interviews he has collected in his new book, American Prophets: Interviews with Thinkers, Activists, Poets & Visionaries (Seattle Poetics Lab). Included here are Paul Nelson’s interviews with luminaries such as Rupert Sheldrake, Jean Houston, Wanda Coleman, Allen Ginsberg and many others… I hope to see you.

American Prophets Elliott Bay Books Sunday, Feb 3, 3pm

Dear SPLAB-Fan,

I have several events at which I will be promoting American Prophets and I hope to see you at one or two. The first is on Super Bowl Sunday! Good news is that it is BEFORE kickoff, if you are a football fan and think the Patriots will not be cheating. If you are NOT a football fan, it is something of much deeper substance (I think) and is consistent with SPLAB’s penchant for doing poetry counter-programming of the game. We did many times the Super Bowl of Poetry and, when there was the threat of legal action because of the use of that term, we called it the Superb Owl of Poetry. One of the promotional lines I remember from back then was “take a pass on the pigskin.” Well, here are the gigs:

In this participatory workshop on interviewing, you’ll learn techniques to quickly develop rapport, ask questions that spark thought provoking responses, and sharpen your skills in this under-appreciated art form… Presented by Wordstorm.

Sunday, February 17, 2019, 2-4pm – The Abbey, 2687 Penrith Ave (enter on 1st St.) Cumberland. The Art of the Interview: Paul E Nelson discusses American Prophets: Interviews 1994 to 2012, featuring poets Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, Wanda Coleman, Jerome Rothenberg, Nate Mackey, Brenda Hillman and Sam Hamill, and will facilitate an interview exercise. Make It True meets Medusario Anthology

Make It True meets Medusario is a bilingual anthology was spawned by two previous anthologies and combined into one to initiate a dialog between Spanish language poets of the neo-barroco school, as organized by José Kozer and poets from the Cascadia bioregion, as organized by Paul E Nelson and Thomas Walton.

From the books’ introduction by Matthew Trease, the book is an effort to:

bring together poets from divergent languages, cultures, and aesthetics to create a… conversation… a fertile meeting place for ongoing ideas about poetry – something messy that might trouble the too-easy academic labels and the subsequent segregation those aesthetic and political divisions caused within the larger, global poetry community.

Poets included in the book from the neo-barroco (Medusario) side are: Carmen Berenguer, Marosa Di Giorgio, Roberto Echavarren, Eduardo Espina, Reynaldo Jiménez, Tamara Kamenszain, José Kozer, Pedro Marqués de Armas, Maurizio Medo, Soleida Ríos, Roger Santiváñez and Raúl Zurita. Cascadians (Make It True) include Stephen Collis, Elizabeth Cooperman, Sarah de Leeuw, Claudia Castro Luna, Nadine Maestas, Peter Munro, Paul E Nelson, John Olson, Shin Yu Pai, Clea Roberts, Cedar Sigo, Matthew Trease and Thomas Walton.

The book is to be launched May 2019, in Anacortes, Washington, at the Cascadia Poetry Festival and published by Pleasure Boat Studios. Festival Gold Passes go on sale March 9.
